Question

Can mCODE represent both a morphology and histology result in the same attribute?

Answer

The FHIR CodeableConcept data type can have alternate codes provided that it is a different coding system representing the same concept or one that has a “subsumes” relationship. However, one CodeableConcept cannot represent different concepts. If there are different tumors with different morphologies or histologies, it is not possible to represent that in mCODE 1.0. In the future, we are considering making histology/morphology a separate observation (removing the extension from the PrimaryCancerCondition). This will make it possible to associate multiple histologies/morphologies to one cancer or specific tumors/tumor sites.
