A number of potential CodeX Use Cases which are now in the "Discovery" phase. These are Use Cases that promise to substantially improve cancer care and research through community alignment around the use of mCODE and necessary extensions for sharing of standard, structured cancer data.  Current and prospective CodeX members are reviewing and building out the ideas below, and prioritizing which will be the first CodeX projects. We are also launching the mCODE Community of Practice as a kind of proto-use-case around  routine data collection and sharing of mCODE-based data through EHRs. Contact Steve Bratt or Greg Shemancik to get join the conversation.

mCODE Community of PracticeThe mCODE Community of Practice is a group of health systems and other CodeX members working together to improve cancer care and research by developing best practices for implementing mCODE into production EHRs and other systems to improve cancer care and research.
Empowering Patients to Find Clinical TrialsImprove capability for patients to find clinical trials for which they may be eligible. Define and structure key trial enrollment criteria; incorporate into EHR and structured patient reported data workflows to improve reliability and automated matching capabilities, reducing manual data entry to find potential clinical trials.  
EHR Endpoints for Clinical Trials

Reduce and potentially eliminate manual and/or duplicate data entry into care report forms (CRF). 

Use clinical treatment data captured in the EHR to derive and/or compute clinical trial endpoints.  Scenarios mCODE and CodeX extensions support this data. Scenarios of interest include CAR-T therapies, rare diseases and others.
Alternative Payment Model Data ReportingFacilitate clinical practice reporting to registries and payer repositories governed by oncology payment models, such as chemotherapy episodes.Define and structure oncology APM required data using mCODE and CodeX extensions; incorporate into EHR workflows. 
Drug Value Based AgreementsOperationalize drug value based agreements for clinicians, payers, and pharma.  Define and structure relevant real world data using mCODE and CodeX extensions to enable collection in EHRs, making it available for automated outcome evaluation. 
Radiation Therapy Data for Care Coordination and Data Reuse

Enable sharing of critical radiation therapy summary data for care coordination or data reuse (research, quality measurement, payer-required reporting).


Provider shares radiation therapy oncology treatment summary data with other providers, patients and authorized receivers. mCODE and potential CodeX data elements are incorporated into the radiation oncology workflows.

Clinical Data Exchange Between Providers and Payers for Cancer Care

Enable automatic exchange of clinical oncology data recorded by providers, to payers.

DaVinci HL7 FHIR Accelerator has developed a solution for the generic use case. This use case extends the generic use case with mCODE and CodeX for provider-payer data exchange in support of care for cancer patients.

Enable Clinical Pathway Navigation

Enable clinicians to use an oncology clinical pathway application that accurately navigates to recommended treatments using structured data in the EHR.

Define and structure clinical oncology data required to evaluate branchpoints. Use mCode and CodeX to define data elements and incorporate the new data into existing workflows.
