Scope/domain statement for the code system

(Official or from HTA)

The Health Care Provider Taxonomy code set is a nonmedical data code set designed for use in an electronic environment, e.g. the ASC X12N Health Care transactions mandated under HIPAA.

The Health Care Provider Taxonomy code is a unique alphanumeric code, ten characters in length. The code set is structured into three distinct "Levels" including Provider Grouping, Classification, and Area of Specialization.

The National Uniform Claim Committee (NUCC) maintains the code set. It is used in transactions specified in HIPAA and the National Provider Identifier (NPI) application for enumeration. The NUCC Code Subcommittee is responsible for the processing of taxonomy code requests and maintenance of the code set.

Version management - timing and identification of versions

The Health Care Provider Taxonomy code set is published (released) twice a year: In January, with any modified, new, or deleted codes made effective on April 1st; and in July with any modified, new, or deleted codes made effective on October 1st. The time between the publication release and the effective date is considered an implementation period to allow providers, payers and vendors an opportunity to incorporate any changes into their systems.

  1. Ted Klein Rob McClure Jessica Bota  As we still have a gap in workflow between HTA and JIRA workflow, Jess, can you please make sure a ticket is opened to make sure UTG is updated with the information here for NUCC?

    1. Ticket has been submitted (see  UP-83 - Getting issue details... STATUS ). Rob McClure, I'm not entirely sure what fields needed updating based on the document above. I outlined all of the changes that I made and all of the questions I have for you on the ticket. Ted Klein will still need to push the ticket into Consensus Review before you can visualize the changes but I make it clear what I have done in the comment.

      1. Jess, you are aware that no change in the canonical url is to occur, right? Hence my negative on the change request.
