10.08 HL7 Terminology Authority (HTA)

The HTA is responsible for the creation, implementation, and management of HL7 processes involving external terminology management. These processes shall be influenced by input from the Vocabulary Work Group and existing HL7 terminology practices. The activities of the HTA are intended to complement maintenance of terminology that is used by HL7 Protocol Specifications. The HTA shall work through the TSC to implement any processes or policies that impact the Working Group.

The HTA is responsible for the creation, implementation, and management of HL7 policies and processes involving external terminology management, with a particular focus on terminology sourced from code systems external to HL7 and applicable for universal use. These processes shall be influenced by input from the Vocabulary Work Group and existing HL7 terminology practices. The activities of the HTA are intended to complement maintenance of terminology that is used by HL7 Protocol Specifications. The HTA shall work through the TSC to implement any processes or policies that impact the Working Group.

10.08.01 Purpose

The HTA, as a representative body of HL7 International, shall ensure that HL7 provides timely and high-quality terminology products and services needed for standards development. The HTA shall serve as the single point of contact for any external terminology with which HL7 has established, or in the future shall establish, formal relationships. The HTA works with both the Vocabulary Work Group, responsible for technical terminology structures in HL7 protocol specifications, and HL7 Unified Terminology Governance, responsible for improving the development and use of HL7-authored terminology.
