So you want to get one of those shiny digital badges to show off your expertise and gumption, but you've found yourself quite at a loss on the Badge List website... well, you've come to the right place. In this document, we will outline how to apply for a badge and approval process.

Step One:  Attend a qualifying event, sign up for an appropriate membership, and/or pass an exam. 

Currently, HL7 offers digital badges for a number of opportunities. These items include:

    1. Passing the following exams:
      1. HL7 V2 Control Specialist Certification Exam
      2. HL7 V3 RIM Specialist Certification Exam
      3. HL7 CDA® Specialist Certification Exam
      4. HL7® FHIR® Proficiency Exam
    2. Attending the HL7® FHIR® DevDays 2018 event in Boston, MA
    3. Becoming a founder of the HL7® FHIR® Foundation

You will need your registration or purchase information from these events to apply for a badge.

Step Two:  Visit and sign up (or sign in if you've already made an account).

Please be sure to confirm your account before proceeding.

Step Three:  Select a badge 

Make sure you are selecting a badge are qualified to download. HL7 staff will be confirming that you have met the qualifications before approving each badge request.

Step Four:  Join the badge


Click the button on the right side of the screen that says "Join this badge".

Step Five:  Submit your evidence

Click on the plus sign in the Required Evidence section.

Read the instructions and enter your evidence into either the Summary or the Body fields. Click "Post Evidence" when you are finished providing the information required to be awarded the badge. 

Step Six:  Click "Request Feedback"

Once you are content with your evidence submission, you will need to request feedback from the Badge Awarders. This last step is important to ensure that you will receive your badge in a timely manner. If you do not click "Request Feedback" then the HL7 Badge Awarders are not notified that you have submitted evidence and it might cause your badge to be delayed. 

Step Seven:  Wait for approval.

If you completed step six, approval process can take up to five business days. Once your badge has been reviewed, you'll receive an email. If you badge is still under review, the Badge Awarder might be asking for additional evidence or information to confirm the badge. Once everything is hunky dory, then you will receive an email notifying you of your earned badge. The email will look something like this:

Step Eight:  Share your badge achievement

It's what you've been waiting for! That big beautiful badge to show off how fantastic you are. Kudos! 

Log back in to Badge List and click on your newly awarded badge. Click "Share this badge" for ways to embed your digital badge.

Remember, each digital badge is encoded with proof that you, and you alone earned that badge through blood, sweat, and possibly even the relentless pain of carpal tunnel. Congratulations!
