FHIR Resource Development Project Insight ID[edit | edit source]
Scope of coverage[edit | edit source]
This resource records the use of a healthcare-related device by a patient. The record is the result of a report of use by the patient, a provider or a related person. The resource can be used to note the use of an assistive device such as a wheelchair or hearing aid, a contraceptive such an intra-uterine device, or other implanted devices such as a pacemaker.
This resource does not address the logistics of supply movement and is not associated with a patient. The SupplyDelivery resource would be used for 'generic' movement of devices.
RIM scope[edit | edit source]
To be provided
Resource appropriateness[edit | edit source]
Resource to record the use of devices by patient are necessary in healthcare. While certain use can be derived from procedures, requests, and references, the patient or other care team provider may provided indication that they use a device of a particular kind, or specific instance.
This resource is not meant for use for logistical purposes only, e.g., current location of a device that is not yet allocated to a patient. It may be used to understand the location of the device once allocated to a patient.
This resource is also not meant that allocation of the device to the patient, whether that occurred before the patient actually received the device (e.g., actually ordered and then allocated immediately after which it is shipped/delivered/implanted to the patient) or at the time the patient is receiving the device out of stock.
If the device is "delivered" to the patient through a procedure, e.g., an implantable device, the DeviceUseStatement would not be used, but historically indicating in the absence of such procedure documentation, this resource is used to document its known presence, or absence.
