Bulk Data

Bulk data/paging discussion

Question: How does bulk exchange work with using Parameters as the responding resource?

    1. For a single bundle there’s the option to do paging. However in the Parameters there is no link element so I’m not clear how a large response is broken up. Or is the idea that Bulk FHIR is used where the ndjson file is at the bundle level.

https://chat.fhir.org/#narrow/stream/179250-bulk-data/topic/Paging.20and.20bulk.20data.20implementation.20question

From Bryn:

  • If the operation is defined to return a single Bundle, and that Bundle is defined to be a Bundle of Bundles, then we can implement paging at that level. And that would also provide a reasonable way to do bulk data.
  • Though in the bulk data scenario, you might actually go one level further and decompose all the bundles into their component resources for transmission.
  • Assuming there was a reasonable way to reassemble the bundles on the other end, that would work well.
  • Especially if there are resources that are common between bundles.

Paging and Bulk data: Based on the response from Josh Mandel: Params are bundles per patient using the $Bulk data export for the NJSON files that contain bundles at a per patient level. (see views above) These come in URLs and it is an implementation question on how to gather and download files.

This is one approach to use for gathering related patient data. Need to add the paging to the IG. So there is a need to allow for both paging and the bulk data option.

The group will enter a tracker for this.
