3a. Project Scope

Develop or reference FHIR profiles for COVID 19 data that requires exchange using standards. This will be a library of reusable profiles that can be used for multiple use cases including case reporting, surveillance, orders, analytics, research, etc.

Initially, developed (4/9/2020) FHIR profiles for:
Demographics
Patient
Vital Signs
Exposure History
Symptoms
Diagnostics Tests (labs)
Diagnosis

3b. Project Need

The COVID-19 (previously “2019 novel coronavirus”) disease and SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) is a global pandemic mobilizing extraordinary global effort to combat. The goal for this project is to define interoperable definitions for exchange of symptom, screening, laboratory, demographic, and related resources.
The project is intended to be highly collaborative and actively engage worldwide experts.

3e. Objectives/Deliverables and Target Dates

Deliverables are the FHIR profiles, and IG. Due to worldwide urgency, draft/provisional profiles and pre-ballot materials are expected to be developed in a more expeditious and public manner than would normal be expected. Logica's copy is/will be released on an iterative basis at https://covid-19-ig.logicahealth.org . A pre-release "staging" site is also available.

  1. The name is very broad and suggest to make it more specific, e.g., "COVID-19 Concepts Modeling on FHIR", as it would not cover HL7 SANER or possibly other COVID-19 related projects.

    1. Thanks Hans, I updated the name to "COVID-19 Case Reporting FHIR IG". It's more than concept modeling. We have an IG already published - https://covid-19-ig.logicahealth.org/toc.html.

  2. Susan,

There is an existing "Electronic Case Reporting FHIR IG" that should be used for submitting case reports to PH for COVID-19.  When we spoke about this effort before with you and Stan I thought we agreed this is a more a "library of resources" about COVID but isn't an "Implementation Guide" as isn't implementable in itself and particularly not for "case reporting".  Can the name be something like what Hans suggested or "COVID Library of Resources"?

    Laura

    1. Laura Conn

Yes, I agree that it is a library of resources. It is also published as an IG (https://covid-19-ig.logicahealth.org/toc.html). I'll take your comments and suggestion to our team and we will give it a different name. For sure take off "case reporting". Thanks for your comments.  Susan

  3. Thank you!  Changing it to COVID-19 Case Reporting FHIR IG made it more confusing as that sounds like a full overlap with the existing eICR report already in place.  The eCR Now FHIR App uses that CDA based document as the standard, while using existing FHIR APIs and SMART to access the data in the EHR.  So if there is a different use case that is not reporting but accessing individual data, that would be different but then be named accordingly.
