3. FHIR

3.1 FHIR Tracker Items

Current BR&R Open Items

  • GF#17794 – will need to gather more background info to evaluate
  • CRN team will review the items assigned to them

3.2 ResearchStudy / ResearchSubject

  • Lloyd suggested moving maturity level from 0 to 2
    • Have been used in Connectathon, part of production at Accenture
    • Don’t need to formally accept the details of the usage until Level 4
    • Will find out what the resources are being used for, and revisit the level on the Nov 13 call
  • The semantics of StudySite
    • Reviewed the distinction between Healthcare Facility and Organization. (Healthcare Facility used to be the Role of Organization)
    • May also consider Healthcare Facility as a capability, since StudySite may not be a Healthcare Facility (e.g. could collect measurements in a park or cafeteria)
    • Interested in the entity that is responsible for the site rather than its location, but should be able to represent both

Josh Mandel - SMART on FHIR (Slide Link)

  • Validation: No official certification program on the clinical system. E.g. Inferno tool. Each vendor has their own set of rules and policies, user developer programs to vet apps.
  • Geographical spread: Supported by US government (ONC) and the work has been largely been in the US, but there is nothing US-specific. Profiles are more US-specific (e.g. supporting Argonaut profiles), but work is being done internationally to support regional
  • Clinical research apps: At Harvard Medical School, a project Sync for Science empowering consumers to share their data with researchers. For researchers, FHIR Bulk Data project provides ways of exporting data from EHRs in bulk to support population model access (as opposed to individual patient records).
