49. Description

The purpose of this implementation guide is to provide a HL7 CDA-based set of templates defining a standardized document that can be used to convey supporting clinical documentation from a dental provider to a payer (e.g., insurance company) to substantiate a claim for orthodontic care.

These are categories of potential users, implementers, or other interested parties such as those that are indicated on the Project Scope Statement under “Stakeholders/Vendors/Providers”. Select those that are applicable, or suggest others:

50. Stakeholders

51. Vendors

52. Providers

Healthcare Institutions (hospitals, long term care, home care, mental health)

53. Benefits

This guide meets the business need that the American Dental Association and dental providers have for a computable electronic orthodontic attachment to supplement the existing STU for the periodontal attachment. The document template in this guide allows payers to improve automation of processing of attachments provided to substantiate claims.

54. Implementations/Case Studies

Anticipated implementers include:
1) US Department of Defense
2) State Medicaid Programs - Arkansas, Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington

This guide was developed with the sponsorship of the American Dental Association, and the US Department of Defense.

55. Development Background

This standard is closely related to the content in the HL7 CDA® R2 Periodontal Attachment Implementation Guide: Exchange of C-CDA Based Documents, Release 1 - US Realm; published on July 20, 2017.
